High school students attending the annual Skills USA national competition June 20-24, 2022, got a chance to hone their brazing skills and learn more about careers in numerous industries. The competitions for each industry included a series of testing stations to assess skills. For the brazing competition, pros from The Harris Products Group, a manufacturer of cutting, welding, brazing, and soldering equipment, demonstrated proper brazing techniques, reviewed safety lessons, and tested students on their skills. Students were given one hour to complete a closed-loop system of copper-to-copper and copper-to-steel connections while nitrogen purging. Harris tested their connections with a pressure/leak test. The overall first, second, and third place winners in each category were awarded cash and product prizes. Timothy Reading of The Harris Products Group instructs a student on brazing skills.

Fraunhofer-led collaboration attaches optical fibers directly to photonic integrated circuits. Laser welding for reliable fiber-PIC connections Researchers in Germany and The Netherlands have devised a new laser welding process for photonic integrated circuits (PICs) that they believe could be scaled to mass production - thus making biophotonics applications more commercially viable. Developed under the BMBF-funded “PICWeld” Eurostars project and subsequent follow-up work, the effort has been led by the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration (IZM) , with support from LioniX , Phix Photonics , and ficonTEC . Adhesive-free approach Their approach uses a carbon dioxide laser and is described as space-saving and robust, as well as eliminating the need for adhesives. “Integrating the process into an automated alignment system has proven its...

Texas State Technical College Welding Technology instructor Daniel Aguirre has seen his students make remarkable strides over the past 10 months. With six students preparing to graduate later this summer, Aguirre said he hopes the next cohort will find similar success. “I have seen a lot of improvement from all of the students since we began back in August,” he said. “Some of them came in here with experience, and some with none. They have all progressed beautifully in the program. They are not the same students who were here on day one.” In addition to learning different skills, Aguirre said he wants them to learn what it is like to be a welder in the actual workforce. “I want them to know what to expect when they are working in the field,” he said. “Some of them are ready right now to hit the road to a successful career.” Student Bobby Suniga had a goal when he...

Lincoln Electric has opened registration to its welding courses, with a plan to focus on code standards. As part of Lincoln Electric's Blodgett Design Seminars, its Design of Welded Connections: Steel Structures seminar will now take a closer look at AWS D1.5 code standards, in addition to the traditional coursework. The structural seminar will take place Oct. 24-28 at the Welding Technology & Training Center in Cleveland, Ohio. The seminar provides 36 hours of coursework across a full week of training, for 3.6 continuing education units (CEUs) for those who design and build steel structures such as buildings, bridges, towers and similar structures. Typical attendees include structural engineers, fabricators, erectors and inspectors. During the sessions, participants will review connections that are subject to static, cyclic and seismic loading. “In the past, we’ve focused on AISC 360 and AWS D1.1 standards to support various engineering ...

Vitesco Technologies uses state-of-the-art green lasers from TRUMPF for energy-saving welding of copper Due to electrification in the drive, copper welding is currently a key manufacturing process Green laser systems are energy-efficient and also reduce manufacturing effort Copper welding with green lasers is already being used in a current electronics series project for the BMW group Regensburg, July 4, 2022. Vitesco Technologies, a leading international manufacturer of modern drive technologies and electrification solutions, is using innovative laser systems from its long-standing production engineering partner TRUMPF. With the introduction of the new green laser equipment for copper welded joints, Vitesco Technologies is among the pioneers in the serial use of this new solution. Compared with infrared laser systems – the standard in copper welding to date – the use of green lasers can reduce energy consumption by up to 20 percent, depending on the application, and thus t...
Time to Automate Your Operation? Aobots will help, but software is the key.

When warehouse managers consider approaching automation, they correctly picture robotic arms and machines that use novel grippers and pickers to move items from one place to another. And those things are important. But the most critical piece of automation, and the one that determines whether that expensive robot arm will ultimately deliver a return on its (significant) investment, is the software that powers it. If you’re planning to automate some portion of your operation, it’s just as critical that you consider your software solution carefully as it is to choose the best robot for your application. It’s a daunting task. It’s far easier to look at hardware and understand exactly what you need than it is to consider the wide-reaching effects your software selection could have on your throughput, your operational efficiency, and your bottom line. The software must be customizable and intelligent, and it must allow the humans in the warehouse to continu...
