Welding of tracks for metro tunnel done

Kanpur: The work of laying and welding of rail tracks in the ‘upline and ‘downline’ of the approximately 1260 metre-long underground tunnel between Bada Chauraha and Nayaganj Metro station was completed, and the work of casting the track slab started on Thursday.

For track construction, the process of bringing down the railway tracks started from August 2. The FBW (Flash Butt Weld) plant was lowered to the ground to lay and weld 268 rail tracks, each 18 metre-long and weighing one tonne, near the under-construction Bada Chauraha Metro station. In less than a month, the process of welding and laying of rails in both the ‘upline’ and ‘downline’ tunnels has been completed, claimed the Metro authorities. After this, preparations for casting the slabs under these railway tracks started, they said.

A senior Metro official informed that a mass spring system is being installed on the lowest surface of the track, over which the track slab is cast from a concrete layer about 360 mm thick. “Further derailment guard will also be made on the track slab,” he added.

He further informed that mass spring system is used to absorb the vibration and noise generated during the running of the train. “This spring system made of a substance called polyurethane has been imported from Austria. It is placed on the lowest surface above the tunnel on which the track slab and the rail track is laid on the top”, the official added.
